These deep plugs are typically the preferred size for plants that are shallow-rooted. The additional width of these plugs allows for horizontal growth of the roots, which benefits many species of ferns and sedges.
Each individual plug measures 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” across by 4” deep.
These plugs are landscape-ready, but also offer a head start should you be interested in potting them up.
Plant Description
Appalachian sedge is a very attractive fine-leaved sedge. It is non-aggressive and maintains a tidy mounded form. The thin arching blades create a delicate hair-like mop, up to 2' around. The flowers are inconsequential. Appalachian sedge is one of the few grass-like plants tolerant of full shade. It is found in moist to dry upper elevation woodlands. It is very drought resistant within its natural range, and will not tolerate consistently wet soil. Easy to grow in average to poor soil, it is low maintenance and can be used as a specimen in a shaded rock garden, or planted in groups to create an effective ground cover.
This sedge is well suited to be planted where its roots will be confined, and is a good choice for container gardening. It is just about as deer resistant as it gets.
