Plant description

Pink turtle head is a pink blooming variety of Chelone native to southeastern US, blooms from July to September and grows in moist, rich soils in full to part shade. It attracts bees and butterflies looking for a fall nectar source. It grows in an upright clump at a height of 2 – 4 feet. Chelone lyonii 'Hot Lips' was introduced by North Creek Nurseries to the trade. It earns its common name, turtlehead, from the snapdragon-like flowers, which resemble a turtle's head poking out of its shell.
