Plant Description

Asters are native to North America and are recognizable by their many tiny petals arrayed around a yellow center. Late blooming perennials, asters are important in pollinator gardens to provide late season pollen and nectar. Smooth blue aster is named for its smooth, bright green foliage and blue flowers. ‘Bluebird’ was discovered in 1988 in a Guilford, Connecticut garden as a spontaneously occurring seedling. It was first introduced to the trade in 1994 by the Mt. Cuba Center. Bluebird smooth aster thrives in full sun to light shade with a broad tolerance of soil types and moisture levels. The plant grows well in fields and open woods. It is fragrant and attractive to native bees. At 3 – 4 feet tall and 1 – 2 feet wide, smooth blue aster provides blooms from September to October providing pollinators with much needed later season food.
