Plant Description
Blue Wood Aster 'Avondale' is a floriferous, shorter selection of blue wood aster with light lavender-blue, daisy like flowers with a yellow center. Like the species, 'Avondale' is generally a late-season bloomer with extended bloom time. It starts as early as July in the southern portion of its range and as late as September in northern latitudes. It often continues blooming until November or first frost. The basal leaves are heart-shaped and gray-green. Because it spreads via rhizomes and reseeding, it's a wonderful filler for woodland gardens and mixed plantings. And it's a champion on slopes, where its root system helps hold in soil and slow runoff.
As with the species, 'Avondale' prefers a partially shaded site, but will tolerate sun or shade. For the best flowering, it needs three or more hours of sun during the day. It grows in average, dry or moist soil, but does not like to be consistently wet. Space plants 18"-24" on center. Like the parent, 'Avondale' spreads easily via seed and rhizomes, so is best used where it can be allowed to roam.
