Plant Description

Asters are native to North America and are recognizable by their many tiny petals arrayed around a yellow center. Late blooming perennials, asters are important in pollinator gardens to provide late season pollen and nectar. New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) is a perennial wildflower that typically reaches heights of 3 to 6 feet. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and favors moist, well-drained soils. Blooming from late summer to fall, it features vibrant purple to lavender flowers with prominent yellow centers, providing a beautiful display for gardens and natural areas alike. This plant is an excellent attractor of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, and its seeds are a food source for various birds during the fall and winter months. New England asters are important food sources for migrating monarchs, specialist mining bees and a host plant for the pearlescent butterfly.
